Capsule endoscopy

What is a Capsule endoscopy

Capsule endoscopy, or “Pill Cam”, is a non-invasive day procedure that is performed without sedation. It allows your gastroenterologist to visualize your small intestine by swallowing a capsule that contains a tiny camera, a transmitter and a light. As it passes through your gastrointestinal tract, the capsule takes thousands of pictures and transmits them to a recorder that you wear outside of your body for the day.

Capsule endoscopy helps your gastroenterologist to evaluate signs or symptoms such as bright rectal bleeding or black tarry stools (malaena), low iron, anaemia (low blood count), and other gastrointestinal symptoms. It can also be used to detect inflammation, ulcers and tumours of the small bowel.
